“What is this?”
Last Saturday, people strolling down Market Street between 7th and 8th Streets witnessed a strange sight. Three cars pulled up onto the side of the road and the drivers proceeded to unload 30 giant gold “A” balloons split into three bundles. And we mean giant.
“What is this?” observers asked.
We responded, “We’re launching the art-mapping app, ArtAround.”
0 → 64 Pieces of Art Mapped in San Francisco
From 1 to 2 PM on Saturday, we anchored our balloons in front of the Zio Ziegler mural at 1119 Market Street and greeted guests with a guide of suggested places to find art. Then everyone set off to discover art on their own around the city either using our closed beta version of the app or our responsively designed website http://theartaround.us.
Despite the stubborn San Francisco fog and wind that threatened (and succeeded in a couple of cases) to carry away the balloons that we instructed people to place at their favorite pieces, by the time we checked the website at 2:30, we had plenty of cause to celebrate.
We had gone from zero to 64 art pieces mapped in an hour and a half (by the day’s end, we had mapped more than 100!) and that felt like something to toast to.
Team Effort
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible: Justin Hoover and his team at SOMArts for a great partnership and for providing Electronic Pacific as a stunning backdrop for the party, all of the developers from D.C. to Kentucky to San Francisco (Brian Singer, Blake Hall and Star St. Germain – you know who you are!) and all of those who came out on Saturday to get ArtAround out into Bay Area.
We had a blast and we can’t wait to do this again in at Betti Ono Gallery in Oakland on September 7 at 1p. We hope you can join us! You can find more details and RSVP here.
In the meantime, see more of Pamela Palma’s pictures from the SF kickoff event and check out all of the new art or add your own favorites at www.theartaround.us.
See you around,
The ArtAround Crew:
